And it’s causing a crazy cultural digital revolution — Tech Talk #3

Godbye, Sweet TikTok

TikTok has been a wild place this past week. I’ve been using the app for some time now, although more in just an experimental capacity rather than using it as a dedicated Business Growth Channel.

But people really love the app, mostly young people, but young people tend to becom very invested first users to a platform they know will hit big. It’s not a coincidence that TikTok got banned by a Government where the average age of it’s Congress is 47 years old.

People feel heard on the app, not only because of the chaotic randomness of their videos going viral, but because they easily can connect with others who share their interests on the platform more than any other app they’ve found to date. The Algorithm is just too good, almost like it’s listening to your conversations.

But it will be sad to see if they do get shut down on the 19th (One Day before Trump get’s into Office, also not a coincidence). A lot of small businesses who blew up over viral TikTok videos will definitely suffer, but moreso will the Businesses that never got a chance too, and will probably go back to paying for Facebook Ads for a subpar performance.

The Live Streaming Platform alone blew up seemingly overnight, surpassing record number of active users Twitch has held for a Decade or more. I knew people who Live Streamed for 3 Year on Twitch and got no where, then one day they stream on TikTok, blew up overnight and gained an instant Career.

But TikTok shutting down is a Case Study in the volatile world that is Social Media. It’s why I always suggest everyone have an Email List that you own. You never know when your account or the whole social network you’ve been building for years might get shut down, along with all the revenue and engagement you get from posting your videos. That’s a lot of wasted time and energy on the wrong thing to grow your Business.

Whatever happens after Jan 19th, I will always being experimenting with Social Networks and trying to find my people. I’ll be posting up until that day comes, riding out the wave like the Violinists on the Titanic:

“Gentleman, It’s been a Privilege Writing to you Tonight…”
